Come sapere di cosa riguarda un testo scritto in un lingiaggio a noi sconosciuto?

A volte e' necessario sapere di che argomento parla un testo, anche se e' scritto in un linguaggio che non conosci. Cio' Questo puo' essere abbastanza problematico, se non sai nemmeno in che linguaggio e' scritto il testo. Questo talk mostrera' come e' possibile identificare il linguaggio di un testo scritto ed ottenere almeno alcune informazioni riguardo i contenuti, in modo da decidere se uno specialista e che tipo di specialista sia necessario per saperne di piu'.

Il talk tratta le seguenti questioni:

1 Come identificare un linguaggio

	- testi in sistemi di scrittura non-Romani e come il sistema di scrittura puo' mostrare con che linguaggio abbiamo a che fare,
	- come identificare linguaggi con l'aiuto di semplici testi,
	- trucchi che aiutano a fare almeno ipotesi intelligenti.

2 Come farsi un'idea riguardo al contenuto di un testo

	- identificare (importanti) parole del contenuto e grammatica,
	- traduzioni sporche e veloci,
	- come tradurre un testo da un linguaggio che conosci poco.

Il talk introducd una varieta' di modi, che vanno da approcci pre-internet (e pre-computer) fino a risorse web contemporanee.

How to know what a text in an unknown language is about?

It is sometimes necessary to know what a text is about, even if it is written in a language you don't know. This can be quite problematic, if you do not even know in what language it is written. This talk will show how it is possible to identify the language of a written text and get at least some information about the contents, in order to decide whether a specialist and which specialist is needed to know more.

The talk deals with the following issues:

1 How to identify a language

    * texts in non-Roman writing systems and how the writing system can show what language we deal with,
    * how to identify languages with the help of sample texts,
    * tricks that help to make at least an intelligent guess.

2 How to get an idea about the contents of a text

    * identifying (important) content words and grammar,
    * quick and dirty translations,
    * how to translate a text from a language you hardly know.

The talk will introduce a variety of means, ranging from pre-internet (and pre-computational) approaches to contemporary web resources.
